A Way Out of Bulimia

A unique, experiential eating disorder treatment group in Sydney

Living with bulimia nervosa can feel like living in hell.

It can be isolating, shaming, and deeply secretive. For many people, it becomes something they carry alone, while trying to appear as though everything is fine on the outside.

It is also very hard to find good treatment outside of a rehab setting.

So I have something new and different to offer you if you’re searching for help.

A different kind of treatment space

Initially, I am offering my new experiential group to individuals aged 18+ who are struggling with bulimia nervosa. (See below if you’re not sure that’s you).

Over time, I will expand the program to include people living with a wider range of eating disorders.

For two hours each week, over six weeks, I will be bringing together a small group of people who are united by one thing, their struggle with bulimia, and their desire to get well.

At the beginning, you will be strangers. But very quickly you will recognise your experience in theirs. People living with bulimia immediately understand the condition in one another. There’s no need to explain. From there, the group will settle into a strong and supportive working space.

What makes this different

I don’t believe there is anything quite like this currently available for bulimia outside of a rehab.

This is not traditional group therapy.

These are structured, weekly, holistic treatment groups. There will be space to talk, but the work will go well beyond that. The sessions are designed to be active, experiential, and engaging, while still allowing you to continue working, socialising, and living your life alongside the group.

An eating disorder is not just about food. It is a condition of the mind, the body, and the spirit, which is why this program is designed to work with all three.

What we will be working towards

I want to help you to:

  • Understand your eating disorder in a way that is actually useful
  • Reconnect with your body
  • Begin to identify and regulate your mood states
  • Reflect on your values, and where they might lead you
  • Use connection with others as a source of support
  • Gently move away from ideas and patterns that reinforce the eating disorder

Together, we will build a foundation for your recovery and begin to identify clear direction for what comes next.

And along the way, I also hope we will have some moments of lightness and enjoyment.

Who this group is for

To be eligible, you need to currently be aged 18+ and living with bulimia nervosa.

These are some of the signs:

  • Your self-esteem is strongly tied to how you feel about your body’s shape, size, or weight
  • Your thoughts about food and your body can feel obsessive, and dictate how you live your life
  • Once a week or more, you binge on food (an objectively large amount of food eaten in a short period of time)
  • You then try to compensate in some way, such as vomiting, strict dieting, excessive exercise, fasting, using drugs or alcohol to suppress appetite, or using laxatives or diuretics
  • You feel out of control around food
  • Your thoughts about food and your body can feel obsessive
  • Your weight is typically within a normal range, or slightly higher

If you are not sure whether this applies to you, you are very welcome to contact me and we can talk it through.

Practical details

You will need to be medically stable to take part in the group.

You do not need:

  • A referral
  • A mental health care plan
  • To be under the care of a psychiatrist or GP

You may be seeking help for the first time, or you may have tried many times before. Both are welcome here, as long as you are hoping for change.
